100% of your tax-deductible contribution will help cover the cost of our free four-day medical, healthcare & health education clinic that will serve 650-750 Haitians sugarcane laborers & their families who live in the Dominican “bateyes” (bateyes are isolated & impoverished communities of migrant Haitians who live in the Dominican Republic). Most bateyes are deprived of electricity, clean water, healthcare, access to public transportation, healthy food & education past the 6th grade. Your support helps provide free health care services to approx. 3,500 migrant Haitians who live in “bateyes” surrounding La Romana. Bateyes are impoverished and remote villages (or shantytowns) that are owned by private sugar mill companies. They provide meager sub-standard “housing” (for lack of a better word) for the companies’ Haitian sugarcane cutters and their families. Most bateyes have no fresh water, electricity or access to public transportation and many of the residents suffer from hypertension, malnutrition, mosquito borne diseases, dehydration, injuries, vision loss, viral and bacterial infections, to name a few.
